Great Colorado Payback Returned More than $75 Million in Lost Assets Last Year
Jan. 30, 2025 (DENVER) - Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young invites Coloradans to reclaim missing money from the Great Colorado Payback in celebration of National Unclaimed Property Day this Saturday.
Treasurer Young and Governor Jared Polis have declared February 1 as Unclaimed Property Day in Colorado. Treasurer Young released this video message to encourage Coloradans to search for lost assets.
“With rising prices for groceries and other essentials, a lot of us are looking for extra cash these days,” said Treasurer Young. “Luckily, missing money may be right under your nose! I urge all Coloradans to recover their unpaid wages, uncashed checks, and other unclaimed property through the Great Colorado Payback.”
Each year, companies transfer millions in assets to the Colorado Department of the Treasury when they cannot locate the original owners, including individuals, companies, nonprofit organizations, schools, and other entities. The Great Colorado Payback currently holds over $2 billion in unclaimed property owed to more than 7.5 million individuals and entities.
In 2024, the Great Colorado Payback returned almost $78 million in unclaimed property through 75,000 claims. To streamline the process, the Department’s unclaimed property division now automatically returns some claims without additional paperwork.
