Joint Statement on the Worker Protection Act

April 1, 2025 (DENVER) - Colorado State Treasurer Dave Young and Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold released the following joint statement on SB 25-005.

"American unions built the middle class. But today, too many hard-working Coloradans struggle to afford the basics, save for retirement, and put away something for their children’s education. And too often, when workers try to improve their lives by forming a union, it becomes a difficult and risky struggle due to retaliation and intense opposition by bad actor corporations.

"Expanding workers’ rights will level the playing field and result in better paying jobs, safer workplaces, and a stronger economy that works for all, not just those at the top. That’s why we are proud supporters of the Worker Protection Act in Colorado (SB25-005), which modernizes our labor laws and removes an onerous obstacle—a second election—to workers' ability to freely negotiate with their employers. Colorado’s second election, which requires a 75% supermajority to pass, makes it more difficult to form a strong union. It may lead to additional retaliation of workers and hinders the ability to form a union.

"We look forward to the passage of this important bill to strengthen the middle class by protecting Coloradans’ freedom to have a strong voice on the job and negotiate for better pay and safety."
