The State of Colorado uses the revenue it collects to provide various services to the citizens of the State.
Total state expenditure comprises all amounts of money (including federal grants and reimbursements) paid out by a government during its fiscal year, excluding payment of debt, purchases in investment securities, loans, correcting transactions, and agency or private trust transactions. It includes spending on current operation, capital outlay, grants and subsidies, interest on debt and payments to other governments. Expenditure categories include education, public welfare, hospitals, health, highways, police protection, correction, parks and recreation, natural resources and government administration.
The General Assembly and the Governor are responsible for appropriating state funds to various departments and programs.
